A seawall is an instrumental structure for homeowners who live around the ocean or waterfront areas. Seawalls protect homes and properties from loss of land due to wave action and erosion. If seawalls are appropriately constructed and maintained, they can provide structural support hence preventing damages from water currents for lake front homes in the Lake of the Ozarks area or any other lake areas in Missouri.

Construction of seawalls has taken a structural change over the years. Panels constructed within protected metal rebar and high strength concrete have replaced the use of rocks piled up in pyramid shape. The new method increases seawall life span, given them more strength to withstand surging sea waves and more structural stability.

Defects in Seawalls

Some times the defects are out of control like the rising water level in lakes and you cannot stop a lake from raising its level. Even the tidal flows rise and fall, water pushes itself against the seawall regularly with the help of great waves. As these actions continue, it carries the sand and soil beneath the seawall structure, causing voids and gradual deterioration of the structural composition of the structure. These actions are intensified during heavy rainfall seasons. Seawall damages can be generally categorized into Joint Separation, Cap failure in seawalls, Toe, and Berm failure and Breakage.

Joint Separation

Joint Separation can occur due to aging, structural failure, or insufficient berm at the toe line of the slab. One of the significant consequences of joint separation is the falling apart of slabs and panels in seawalls. When hydrostatic pressure is exerted on the slabs and boards of the seawall, the joints are affected. The visible signs of joint separation in seawalls include holes behind the structure and visible seawall backfills in the water which can only be seen during low tides.

Cap Failure

Cap failure in seawalls is generally caused by corrosion of the reinforced cap or the tieback rods. Cap failures in seawalls are exacerbated by movement of the seawall structure resulting in cracking of the cap. When cracking occurs in the cap, the concrete cap becomes weak and cannot hold panels and slabs together. A deteriorating cap or a sagging panel is an indication that the cap of the structure has failed.

Toe and Berm Failure

Toe and Berm failure are caused by the deficiency of the berm at the bottom of the slab or panels. When panel tilt or crack occurs, it creates a fracture in the Toe and Berm. Cracks or Movement and cap rotation are visible signs that berm and toe are faulty.

How to Repair a Damaged Concrete Seawall

There are a series of available options in repairing existing seawall damages. Excavation, use of cement grouts, and Polyurethane Resin are the options you can implore in tackling defective seawalls.

Excavation requires tearing out a part of the wall for the replacement which is costly, takes time, and sometimes requires a permit. Using cement grout, on the other hand, is mundane, prone to degradation, and adds weight to an already weak seawall, capital, and labor exhaustive.

Polyurethane is the best option available to fix an existing seawall. It is a new generation approach and has a lot of advantages over-excavation and use of cement grout. It can seal failing joints, stabilize loose floors, fill voids without adding weight to a weak substrate and create a watertight barrier under or behind your wall while still maintaining an eco–friendly environment. STL Polyjack Seawall repair experts have worked on many waterfront properties without having to excavate them and all our customers are referrable in St. Louis and the Lake of the Ozarks area.
